Cast The Net, 2020
Installation view of Cast The Net, CCI Fabrica, Moscow, 2020
Curator: Sona Stepanyan

In her new work, artist Oksana Yushko has reconstructed an original mechanism intended for trapping birds at the Rybachy Biological Station in the Baltic Sea. In moving it into the exhibition space, the artist constructs an alternate reality that lacks any of the features found in nature. The trap is a huge, hand-woven net fastened to vertical posts along the route migratory birds follow. Because it is so big, the birds do not see the trap as dangerous. And the same happens with people.
The exhibition Cast the Net will introduce viewers to the history of the biological station and shed light on questions regarding climate change, migration flows, ecological awareness, and the impact of humans on the environment. The artist explores the macro- and micro-effects of this human influence, the co-existence of people and nature in an evolutionary context, the changing meaning of manual labor in the era of industrialization and new technology, and the entwinement of the material world and the world of digital networks. The name of the exhibition recalls the former function of a trap, and also serves as a call to action for professional associations and society at large and a reminder of the transience of time.
The artist invites viewers to pass through the installation space and attempt to find a way out of their current situation.
